Most organizations require a printing service on a regular basis, whether it is for promotional purposes or intra-company communication. Therefore, it is good to have some fundamental knowledge of how printing works, especially offset printing, which is one of the most widely used printing technologies.
The clients and the printers like offset printing due to its cost effectiveness for the production of large number of prints. Therefore good printing service providers recommend the use of offset printing for large volume of prints.
Offset printing uses oil based ink, which does not mix with water. In offset printing, rubber blankets play a transitional role in copying the image on the paper, which is originally on the plate.
The first step is preparing the images. Previously the images were prepared by creating film negatives and were then transferred to printing plates made of aluminum. This is no longer required as the technology exists for making the plates in one step through an image setting system. After this, the plate is attached to a cylinder with the correct side facing upwards. Then the water and ink are spread on the image plates, in that order. While the ink gets fixed to the image, the water gets stuck to that part of the plate where there is no image so that the ink does not spill beyond the image.
The image is then taken from the plates to the rubber blanket spun on another cylinder, so that it is reversed. The image is then printed with its right side facing up by cutting sheets of papers into correct size and placing them on a third cylinder.
The job of printing is finished by the printing company by consolidating the printed sheets using staples or paste or in any other way as per the needs of the client.
